Chapter Seven

The Oracle Group

February 3355

Jens stalked down the hallway, reveling in the way people scurried out of his way. His boots hit the shiny metal floor with resounding thuds, warning everyone of his mood. He reached the end of the hall and barreled into the conference room. His abrupt entrance made several of the occupants jump.

“What the hell is this!” he bellowed, tossing a file onto the slick glass table. Some of the effect was tragically lost when the folder slid across the surface and off the edge, sending papers fluttering to the floor.

Brigadier General Brandt was nearest to the papers. She glanced at the floor. “I’m not picking that up,” she stated. “Why don’t you just use words?”

“Logistics is telling me six more months. Six damn months! What the hell? Already this damn project has been—”

“We’re all aware of how long it’s been,” Lieutenant Colonel Gorman said, pursing his lips in distaste.

The feeling was mutual. Jens wanted to toss the man into the nearest airlock and press the release button every time he saw the damn idiot.

“We cannot cut this project short simply because you’re missing a—”

“Finish that sentence and I’m finding that airlock,” Jens growled. He knew Gorman. It would be something filthy and completely inappropriate.

“Gentlemen!” Brandt rapped her knuckles on the table. “Enough! Now, Pakkala, why don’t you explain your concerns to me?”

Jens made himself take a deep breath. The general he actually liked and, no matter what Gorman thought, Brandt would be the one to make the final call. “I believe it’s a mistake to keep one operative in the field for an extended length of time, you know that. Aside from the risk of discovery, the fact is, we simply don’t know what effect it could have on the body. It’s not natural for a person to be disconnected from their proper time stream. Lydie has expressed concerns, as well. Too long away and we might not be able to get him back.”

“Hmm.” Brandt sat back, looking thoughtful. Jens knew his mention of Lydie would carry more weight than anything. She was their top Temporal scientist and had forgotten more about the complicated business of time travel than many experts ever knew. “What was the longest time we had someone out?”

“Seven months, two days, eighteen hours,” Jens recited.

Brandt nodded. “How much progress has Stilson made?”

Shit. “Not much.” Jens hated admitting that, but damn it, it wasn’t Drake’s fault. Brandt did not look pleased at the confession. Gorman, the bastard, smirked.

“He’s doing his best,” Jens defended. “But we’re working with limited information. Even for the Oracles, this thing is vague.”

“Refresh my memory,” Brandt ordered. “What do we know?”

“That we have to save Henry.”

“Henry who?”

“Damned if we know.” All heads turned as Lydie breezed into the room. “You moved too fast, Pak. I can’t keep up with those long legs of yours.”

General Stacey Brandt smiled at her lover. Lydie waved back. Shaking her head, Brandt said, “Well, have a seat, everyone. Since we’re all here anyway, we might as well get this meeting over with.
